After an intense winter in a lot of the country, most of us have been waiting with bated breath for warmer weather. Now that summer’s finally here, you want to take advantage of the season. But how?
We’ve got a few suggestions, and they’re all free or cheap. If you’ve been looking for easy, fun things to do outside this summer, we’ve got some ideas.
Take a hike
When was the last time you hit your local trail system? If you’ve never done it before, it could be a fun exploration to find the trailhead that’s closest to your house. Once you hit it, aim to keep going until you get somewhere green. Studies show that spending time in green space can help to reduce stress, boost our mood, spark creativity, and deliver other benefits.
If you already hike regularly, you can add a new layer to your next day on the trail by buying a local field guide. As things bloom and wildlife takes advantage of the warmer weather to hunt and forage, you have ample opportunity to learn more about the flora and fauna around you.
Chill by the water
Looking for something that requires a little less physical exertion? Find the nearest body of water and post up. Just like green space, blue space (i.e., any place by water) delivers mental and physical health benefits.
Whether you bring your fishing pole or a book, don’t forget to pack the sunscreen and plenty of water. A few hours on the lakefront, beach, or riverside can leave you feeling refreshed and relaxed.
Plant a garden
If you want an activity that will get you outside regularly, establish a garden at your home or apartment. If you’ve got the space, you can put planter beds in. But even a tiny patio can accommodate a container garden.
Your garden will get you outside often because it will need watering and weeding. And whether you plant flowers, produce, or anything else, you’ll get the benefit of a beautified outdoor area as things grow.
Camp
Even if you live in an area where campsites for the summer fill up quickly, you can still take advantage of this option. Pitch your tent in your outdoor space. If you’re camping with kids, the thrill of sleeping in the backyard might leave them talking for weeks.
If you’re camping solo or with your partner, you might just be surprised how much peace and quiet you can find under the stars mere steps from your house. Bonus: you’ll still have easy access to a proper bathroom and your fridge.
Try yoga in the park
During the summer months, many yoga instructors offer classes in outdoor venues. Do a little research to scout options in your area.
Whether this will be your first yoga class or you have a daily practice, moving through a yoga flow in the fresh air can go a long way. Being outside can make it easier to tune into your breath and tap into the mind-body connection yoga fosters.
If weeding your garden leaves you with a sore back or you want to keep the relaxation going after your yoga class, we have you covered with options like percussion massagers, wearable TENS systems, and more. Get what you need to take full advantage of all of the fun things to do outside this summer.
